IN HER ECHO for piano, clarinet, flute, violin, electronics, voiceover, and video projection In Her Echo is inspired by the ancient Chinese myth of Nüwa, the creator goddess who formed humanity from clay and restored the broken heavens. Rather than retelling the legend directly, the work imagines the myth as an inner landscape, where sound, voice, and image unfold together. Structured as a sequence of 3 instrumental acts and 4 spoken transitions, the piece traces a journey from silence to creation, from growth to sacrifice. The voice of Nüwa appears through poetic monologue, reflecting on solitude, responsibility, and transformation. The instrumental sections expand these emotional states through evolving timbre, gesture, and resonance. Musically, the work draws on elements of Chinese musical aesthetics, including pentatonic contours and fluid melodic motion, while electronics extend the acoustic space and merge with the ensemble’s sound. Visual imagery, developed through audiovisual processing, transforms alongside the music, creating an environment in which sound and image grow from the same expressive source. In Her Echo follows a cycle of emergence, expansion, rupture, and renewal. As the creator gradually dissolves into the world she has shaped, what remains is not absence, but an echo carried through sound, memory, and time.
The Beauty Within is a choreographic work that highlights the human connection of live UArizona dancers and remote NYU dancers represented through interactive visual effects driven by real-time motion capture. The piece explores self-discovery through emotional vulnerability and intimacy, showcasing the beauty within all of us and the importance of human connection.
Immune to Love was inspired by the film Amelie. The main musical idea conveys the beauty of the acoustic sound and the resonance of the piano by using the interplay between the piano and the electronic sound. Incorporating a poem titled Immune in the score and fixed media audio track provides an innovative way for the pianist to perceive the meaning of the piece and also gives the performer a new perspective for their musical expression. With the development of the musical materials, the musical idea becomes clearer, gradually guiding the piece to a soft and romantic ending.
"Starlit Whispers: The Hummingbird's Journey" is a musical piece that starts with a simple question: Have you ever seen a hummingbird flying at night? This isn't just about birds; it's about us, too. It's about our dreams, our search for new beginnings, and our journey towards a brighter future. This composition draws you in, inviteing you to think about how, just like hummingbirds embark on their unseen night journeys, we're all on a quest. We're searching for opportunities, chasing survival, and longing for a place where we feel we truly belong.
The whole idea actually got its inspiration from Julian Charriere's film—his way of diving deep into the textures of sounds and how they fill up a space really got me thinking. This piece isn't just about music; it's about immersing ourselves in the sonic landscape of the ocean—its waves, its whispers, and the rhythmic dance of water. Through the use of ocean sounds and the delicate, resonant tones of the vibraphone, we're invited to explore the natural world in a way that's both intimate and expansive. It's more than just music; it's an invitation to think about how sound shapes the world around us and how it changes our perception of space. Also, remind me to think about the connections we have—with our friends, family, lovers, you name it.
Identity was inspired by a video installation titled The Visitors at SFMOMA. The creator, Ragnar Kjartansson, is a contemporary Icelandic multidisciplinary artist. Identity traces my own experience of finding myself through the whole, fragmented, or implied thought forms, and finding our existence in the world, both as an individual and a part of the community. In the piece, the cell slowly expands the music via dynamic expansion, pitch material expansion, and rhythm expansion throughout the entire piece in a series of wavelike gestures. On the other hand, the flute draws the fragmented thoughts of the whole piece via grace notes and short melodic materials.
